Positioned between PSTN and IP networks, this media gateway performs a range of voice codec conversion functions and provides softswitch interworking, serving as a key component of next-generation packet-based networks. SMEC’s Media Gateway interfaces with PSTN networks via E1/T1 and STM-0/STM-1 trunk interfaces supporting up to several thousand channels. It performs media conversion and switching for IP subscribers on IP networks through Gigabit Ethernet interfaces under the control of a softswitch.
